Suddenly the relatively quiet town of Walterboro finds itself on the top of Govenor Mark Sanford’s agenda.
“He called us to see if we needed any further help, “said Mayor Bill Young. “And to see if we needed a state of emergency.“
They didn’t at least not yet. In the meantime, the Mayor did ask for outside reinforcement. State law enforcement sent several dozen extra officers into town Thursday evening to make sure the streets are a little safer and to make sure the town sleeps a bit easier. Thursday afternoon, the Mayor and his staff spent hours in an emergency meeting developing a game plan to deal with the string of shootings.
“We wanted to create a saturation team here and make sure no one else gets hurt.“
Mayor Young doesn’t want to call the shootings gang related just yet but the similarities are there.
“We think they are close net groups that live close together.
